An oily substance called sebum, produced by the skin's sebaceous glands, acts as a natural lubricant for the skin, but when too much is produced the glands can become blocked and inflamed, causing blackheads and pimples. Sometimes the blocked glands become infected. Pus and sebum build up under the skin, forming larger pimples or cysts which can leave scars or "pitting".

Keep the skin scrupulously clean by washing up to five times daily but taking care that it does not become too dry. Women should avoid heavy make-up, but light, non-greasy products won't do any harm and may boost self-confidence. Remove make-up thoroughly every evening with a natural cleanser followed by toner and moisturizers if the skin feels tight or dry.
Most health food shops stock natural cosmetics and skin-care products, and some can easily be made at home. For example, you can make a cheap, effective toner by mixing equal parts of rose water and witch hazel.
Other natural skin remedies include garlic, which acts as a natural antibiotic when rubbed on the skin. An ointment made with propolis (a resin substance extracted from flowers by bees) can be dabbed on several times a day.
